5th edition of the Białowieża Statistics School

We are now accepting registrations for the 5th edition of the Białowieża Statistics School (BSS).

It will take place from April 22nd to 27th, 2024, at the headquarters of the Białowieża Geobotanical Station (Sportowa 19 Street, 17-230 Białowieża). The BSS offer is aimed at master’s and doctoral students conducting scientific research in the field of ecology who are interested in expanding their knowledge of statistics and data analysis. The course will be conducted using free software R and RStudio. Participants are required to have their own computer equipment with the installed software (R and RStudio), a database prepared in the form of a spreadsheet, and a related research problem.

During the BSS, participants will learn:

  • Basics of R language syntax
  • Preparation of databases for analysis and checking their correctness
  • Exploratory data analysis methods
  • Linear and nonlinear regression
  • Application of mixed models
  • Analysis of variance and statistical tests
  • Clustering observations using dendrograms
  • Multidimensional analysis methods (ordination)

The first five days of the course will be divided into three blocks: an introductory lecture, exercises, and work with participants’ own data. Due to the limited number of places (14), recruitment will be based on the quality of the dataset description, research problem, and motivation to participate in the BSS.

Participation in the course is free. Meals and accommodation are at participants’ own expense. For logistical reasons, we suggest accommodation in guest rooms (multi-bed rooms) at the Białowieża Geobotanical Station.

Schedule:

  • February 21st – start of registration
  • March 18th – end of recruitment
  • March 22nd-25th – email notification of acceptance or rejection for the course
  • April 22nd-27th – course
