FunDivEUROPE (FUNctional significance of forest bioDIVersity in EUROPE) miał na celu zbadanie wpływu różnorodności biologicznej lasu na funkcjonowanie ekosystemu oraz na zakres i jakość tzw. usług ekosystemowych (ecosystem services) w głównych typach europejskich lasów i regionach bioklimatycznych Europy. W projekcie dokonano oceny funkcjonowania jednogatunkowych i wielogatunkowych drzewostanów oraz przedstawiono prognozę ich funkcjonowania w perspektywie zmian klimatycznych.
Projekt łączył globalną sieć eksperymentów nad funkcjonalnym znaczeniem różnorodności gatunkowej drzew (tree diversity experiments; Experimental Platform) z siecią powierzchni badawczych w sześciu regionach Europy (Exploratory Platform): Finlandii (lasy borealne), Polsce (mieszane lasy hemiborealne – Puszcza Białowieska), Rumunii (buczyny górskie), Niemczech (buczyny nizinne), Włoszech (kserotermiczne lasy śródziemnomorskie) i Hiszpanii (wieczniezielone lasy śródziemnomorskie). Dodatkowo analizom poddano dostępne bazy danych z sieci monitoringu lasów (Inventory Platform). Powierzchnie badawcze projektu są nadal wykorzystywane w wielu projektach badawczych, w tym korzysta z nich również projekt Dr. FOREST.
